Slide-scanning services hand back a file with the same dead color the slide had. How to correct it, and handle 35mm film without touching the emulsion.

Every slide-scanning service ends the same way: a folder of digital files lands in your inbox, and the color inside them is exactly as dead as the color in the box of slides you mailed in. Digitizing a slide and restoring one are two different jobs, and the market mostly sells the first and stays quiet about the second. A 35mm transparency was built to glow with light shone through it; once its dyes fade, no scanner setting brings that glow back — only work on the resulting file does. Getting there also means handling the slides correctly, because the film survives less rough treatment than a print does.

Why slide color dies the way it does — and how to handle what is left

Color slide film fades unevenly because its dye layers age at different rates, and which film it is changes the outcome. Chromogenic films — Ektachrome and Agfachrome among them — build all three dye couplers into the emulsion before the film is ever exposed, and over the decades one layer typically fades faster than the others, pulling the whole image toward a single cast rather than dimming evenly. Kodachrome worked differently: its dyes were not present in the film at all until a complex processing step added them, and that difference gives Kodachrome slides a reputation among archivists for holding their color longer than most of what came after. None of this is visible from the mount — two slides shot the same week on different film stocks can look decades apart today.

The film itself deserves careful hands. View a slide by holding it at its edges or its cardboard or plastic mount, up to a window or over a light table, and resist the urge to touch the frame to check focus or dust — skin oils mark the emulsion permanently, and the mark is often invisible until it is scanned and enlarged. Dust trapped inside a sealed mount is a separate problem: it shows up on every scan as the same speck in the same place, and the fix is a soft blower on the mount’s opening, never a cloth or a fingertip on the film.

Slides kept in humid, poorly ventilated storage — a common story for boxes that spent years in a tropical or coastal climate — can develop fungus on the gelatin. It shows as fine web-like or feathery marks that keep spreading as long as the humidity does, and it physically etches the emulsion, so this is real, permanent damage rather than surface dirt. The two things worth knowing: it stops spreading once the film is dry and ventilated, and a scan of what survives underneath the marks can usually still be restored — the fungus pattern is treated like any other fine damage once it is on a digital file instead of the film.

From a box of slides to a restored photo

  1. Sort before you scan anything

    Handle each slide by its mount or edges only. Set aside any that feel stuck to their mount or show the web-like marks of fungus — they still need to be digitized, just handled gently.

  2. Look at what you actually have

    Hold a few up to a window or a light table. This alone tells you which boxes are worth the time and which film stock you are dealing with — Kodachrome slides often still show real color; heavily chromogenic ones may look almost monochrome with a color cast.

  3. Digitize by transmitted light

    A dedicated slide scanner, a scanning service, or a macro photo of the slide held in front of a bright, even light source all work. What matters is even lighting behind the film and a mount that holds it flat — curled or tilted film scans soft on one side.

  4. Correct the color — the step scanning skips

    A raw scan carries the fade straight through. Restoring it means rebalancing the shifted dye layers, recovering contrast, and cleaning dust and fungus marks — the actual difference between a digital copy of a faded slide and a photograph that looks like the moment it was taken.

  5. Store the originals properly afterward

    Once you have a good digital file, the physical slide’s job is basically done. Keep it anyway, in a dry, cool, ventilated spot in its original mount — you have just made sure nothing is lost if it keeps aging.

I already had my slides scanned by a service — do I need anything else?

Probably, if the color still looks off. Most scanning services deliver exactly what the film shows, faded cast included — correcting that cast is a separate restoration step, not part of scanning. Can badly faded Kodachrome or Ektachrome slides actually be fixed?

Often yes, because the dye information that looks lost to the eye is frequently still there in weakened form, and restoration rebuilds contrast and rebalances the cast. Where a layer has genuinely faded to nothing, that area is reconstructed from context rather than recovered — you see the result before paying, so you can judge it on your own slide.

How do I get dust out of a sealed slide mount without opening it?

A soft air blower aimed into the mount’s opening handles loose dust. Dust or a hair actually inside a glass-mounted slide needs the mount opened by someone comfortable doing it carefully — otherwise it is easier to remove the marks digitally from the scan than to risk the film prying it open.

The film has faint web-like marks and a musty smell — is that mold?

It is consistent with fungus growth, common in slides that spent time in humid storage. Move the box to a dry, ventilated spot to stop it spreading, handle those slides last so spores do not transfer to healthy ones, and scan them as they are — the marks are treated like fine damage once the image is digital.
