A poster-sized enlargement on a wall is typically seen from six feet back or more, and at that distance the eye cannot resolve the same density anyway; something closer to 150 pixels per inch holds up fine, because distance is quietly doing part of the sharpening for you.

The practical rule follows directly: take the longest side of your file in pixels and divide it by the pixels-per-inch you are targeting — the result is the maximum honest print size, in inches, for that use. Say a restored file is 3,000 pixels on its long side: at 300 pixels per inch (300 PPI) — a print you will hold and study — that supports about 10 inches; at 150 PPI — a poster viewed across a room — the same file supports about 20 inches. Same file, two different honest ceilings, purely because of how it will be looked at.

This is also why the scan comes first, before restoration ever enters the picture. A photo scanned small or photographed loosely simply does not have the pixels to print large, no matter how good the repair work on top of it is — digitizing sets the ceiling, and nothing downstream can raise it.

Why the surface you print on matters as much as the file

Glossy photo paper is the least forgiving surface there is. It is sharp, reflective and high-contrast, which means it shows exactly what is in the file — every soft edge, every faint upscaling artifact, every place restoration had to make a judgment call on damaged detail. A large, clean, high-resolution file rewards that honesty. A file that started life as a small, soft or heavily damaged print does not.

Canvas and matte, textured fine-art papers work the opposite way. The texture of the surface itself scatters the light hitting it, so the eye is already doing some visual smoothing before the image data is even considered — softness that would read as an obvious flaw on glossy paper reads as texture, even character, on canvas. That is not a trick or a downgrade; it is an honest match between a source with real limits and a surface built to be forgiving of them.

The practical rule: if the restored file started from a small, faded or heavily damaged original, canvas or a textured matte paper is the honest choice, not a consolation prize. Save glossy, high-contrast paper for files that started from a large, clean scan or a negative with real detail to spare.

What upscaling actually does

Upscaling — enlarging a file beyond the pixel count it was captured at — does not create detail that was never there. A face that was a few pixels across in the original scan does not have eyelashes hidden inside it waiting to be found. What upscaling genuinely does is reconstruct a plausible, smooth transition between the pixels that do exist, so the blocky, jagged look of a file stretched past its native size turns into something soft and photographic instead. That is a real improvement — it is simply a different thing than recovering detail that was lost.
