How to restore old photos, start to finish

The full path from a damaged print to a restored image: scanning it properly, repairing damage in the right order, recovering color, and archiving.

Every family archive eventually produces the same scene: a box of photographs, some scratched, some folded, some fading toward orange, and one person deciding to save them. This guide is the whole path — how to get the prints into digital form without hurting them, what order to repair damage in, when colorization makes sense, and how to store the results so nobody has to do this rescue twice. No single step is difficult; the craft is doing them in the right order.

The one principle everything follows

Never repair the original — repair a copy. Physical fixes on the print itself (tape, ironing, wiping, trimming) are how photos get destroyed by the people who love them most. The original’s only jobs are to be scanned once, well, and then to rest in the dark. Everything else happens digitally, where a mistake costs one click.

The second principle follows from the first: scan before you sort. A print you judge “too far gone” today may restore beautifully, and a print that looks fine may be fading faster than you think. Digitize the whole box; triage the files, not the originals.

The restoration sequence

  1. Digitize the print

    A flatbed scanner is best; a careful phone photo in daylight works. Aim for 600 DPI on small prints, no flash, no auto-enhance filters. Details in our digitizing guide.

  2. Read the damage before touching anything

    Identify what you are dealing with: physical damage (scratches, tears, creases, stains) versus tonal damage (fading, color shift, yellowing) versus sharpness problems. Each has its own fix, and the order matters.

  3. Repair physical damage first

    Scratches, tear lines, creases and stains are reconstructed from the surrounding image. Doing this first gives every later step a clean canvas to work on.

  4. Recover tone and color

    Contrast comes back, color casts are rebalanced, faded layers are rebuilt. On black-and-white prints this means true blacks and clean paper-whites instead of a grey haze.

  5. Colorize — if you choose to

    Optional, and a matter of taste: colorization reconstructs plausible color for a black-and-white image. Some families want the 1950s in color; some want the silver-grey original. Both are right.

  6. Sharpen and enlarge for the final use

    If the photo will be printed or framed, enhancement brings up fine detail and scales small originals to printable size. Sharpening comes last — sharpening damage before repairing it only etches the damage in deeper.

  7. Archive the results

    Keep three things: the untouched scan, the restored file, and the original print stored flat and dark. Two digital copies in two places — a drive plus a cloud — is the minimum that survives a failed disk.

Scanning checklist

  • Clean the scanner glass with a microfiber cloth before starting
  • Dust the print with a soft blower — never wipe the emulsion
  • 600 DPI for prints up to postcard size, 300 DPI is the floor for larger ones
  • Turn off automatic dust removal, sharpening and color “enhancement” in the scanner software
  • Save as TIFF or maximum-quality JPEG, never medium-quality JPEG
  • Include a few millimeters of border around the print in the scan
  • Name files with what you know: people, place, approximate year
  • Back the raw scans up before starting any restoration

Questions from people starting a family archive

Should I restore the scans myself or use a service?

What order should I work through a big box of photos?

Scan everything first. Then restore in order of what matters to people, not what is most damaged — the portrait of a grandmother beats a badly torn landscape. Damage level affects effort, not priority.

Is it worth restoring photos that seem only slightly faded?

Scan them now in any case — fading only moves one direction. Whether to restore lightly faded photos is a judgment call; seeing a before-and-after of one photo usually settles it for the whole box.

What about the negatives I found in the same box?

Negatives are often in better shape than any print and hold more detail. They need a scanner with backlight capability or a photographed lightbox setup. If you have both print and negative, the negative is usually the better source.
