Restoring a photo from a newspaper clipping

A newspaper clipping is dots on acidic paper that yellows fast. How to scan a clipping without moiré and turn the dot pattern back into a photograph.

Sometimes a newspaper clipping is the only image of a person that survives — the wedding announcement, the team photo, the obituary portrait. Restoring one is a different problem from restoring a print, because a newspaper picture is not a continuous photograph at all: it is thousands of ink dots on cheap paper that was engineered to last a day, not a lifetime. Both problems — the dots and the paper — have workable answers.

What you are actually holding

Newspapers reproduce photographs as halftones: a grid of dots whose varying sizes fool the eye into seeing continuous tone. Up close, the face dissolves into the grid. When you scan a halftone, the scanner’s own pixel grid interferes with the dot grid and produces moiré — swirling artificial patterns that can be worse than the dots themselves.

The paper is the second clock ticking. Newsprint is made from wood pulp that still contains lignin, which is why clippings yellow within years and turn brittle within decades. A clipping that has gone deep amber and chips at the folds is normal aging, not neglect.

To digitize a clipping: scan at high resolution — 600 DPI or more helps resolve the dot structure cleanly — and if your scanner offers a descreen option, try one pass with it and one without, then keep both files. Handle brittle clippings flat and support them fully; they snap along folds without warning. Restoration then removes the halftone pattern, rebuilds continuous tone, and lifts the yellow of the paper — turning the grid of dots back into a face.

Can a real photo be recovered from a halftone, or is it always a compromise?

The dots genuinely limit how much original detail exists — a halftone holds less information than the print it was made from. Restoration rebuilds a continuous, natural-looking image from what the dots preserve, and results on portraits are usually strong. You judge yours before paying.

Should I flatten the fold in a brittle clipping before scanning?

No — brittle newsprint cracks when forced flat. Lay it on the glass, let the lid apply its own gentle weight, and leave the rest to digital repair. A fold line is far easier to fix than a snapped clipping.

The clipping also has text I want to keep. Possible?

Yes. Scan the whole clipping. Restoration can treat the photograph while leaving the headline and caption legible — for many families the caption is half the value.
