What AI colorization really does, where its colors come from, what it gets right and wrong, and how to colorize a family photo people will believe.

Colorizing a black-and-white photograph is the most emotionally loaded operation in restoration: done well, a stiff grey ancestor becomes a person who could walk into the room; done badly, everyone gets orange skin and a hand-tinted postcard look. The difference lies in understanding what colorization actually is — an informed reconstruction, not a recovery — and in giving the model an honest, well-restored image to work from.

Where the colors come from

A black-and-white photo records brightness, not color — the color information was never captured, so nothing can literally bring it back. Colorization infers it: trained on enormous numbers of photographs, the model reads texture, shading and context, and assigns each region the color such scenes plausibly had. Skin, sky, foliage and wood come out reliably because their colors follow strong patterns. A dress that could equally have been blue or burgundy is a guess — plausible, not documentary.

This is why details you actually know are worth stating. Eye color, hair color, the fact that the uniform was navy — known facts turn guesses into decisions. And it is why colorization deserves the label of reconstruction when accuracy matters, for instance in anything historical you plan to publish.

Order matters too: colorize after restoration, not before. Color applied over scratches and stains gets reconstructed into the damage, and fixing it afterwards costs quality. Colorization questions

Will the colors be historically accurate?

Plausible, not guaranteed. Common materials colorize with high confidence; specific items with arbitrary color are informed guesses. For family memory this reads naturally; for scholarly use, treat the result as an interpretation and say so in the caption.

Does colorizing change the original scan?

Never — you receive a new file, and both the scan and the print remain untouched. Keeping the black-and-white version alongside the colorized one is good archival manners.

My photo is sepia rather than grey. Does that matter?

No. Sepia toning is handled as part of the process: the brown cast is neutralized, then color is reconstructed. The warm tone does not confuse the result.

Can a damaged black-and-white photo go straight to colorization?
